Review guidelines

Fairsay works when reviews are honest and useful, to the people choosing an app and to the people building it. These guidelines cover every review, reply and report, from everyone, product owners included.

A good review

  • Is about your own experience with the product.
  • Says what you tried, what happened and what you think, so someone else can decide for themselves.
  • Picks the kind that fits: praise, an idea, a bug or a question.
  • Has a star rating that matches what you wrote.

One review per product: if things change, edit yours instead of posting another.

Not allowed

  • Fake reviews: reviewing a product you haven't used, or posting a review someone else wrote.
  • Reviewing your own product, or a competitor's: that covers its owners, staff and investors, and the friends and family they ask.
  • Reviews for something in return: money, discounts, free features or gifts, for writing a review, changing one or taking one down.
  • Picking reviewers: asking customers for reviews is fine. Asking only the ones you expect to be happy, or telling them what to say, isn't.
  • Personal information: anyone's email, phone number, address, or anything else private, yours included.
  • Attacks on people: harassment, threats, hate, slurs and sexual content. Criticise the product as hard as you like; leave the people behind it out of it.
  • Spam: ads, sales links, and the same review on many products.
  • Off-topic posts: anything that isn't about using the product.
  • Breaking the law: including copying someone else's writing or pretending to be someone else.

Replies from owners

Once you've verified your product, you reply under its reviews as the maker, where everyone can see it. Answer the review: say thanks, explain, say what you'll fix, or ask for more. Don't argue with someone's experience, share anything private about them, or offer them anything to change their review. A calm, specific reply often does more for you than a five-star review.

Reports and what we do

A product's owner can report a review from their dashboard, and anyone can email [email protected] about one. We read reports and take down reviews that break these guidelines. A review isn't taken down for being negative, and owners can't hide reviews: only we can, and only for breaking these guidelines. We may close accounts that keep breaking them.

Imported reviews

Reviews a product brings in from the App Store or Product Hunt were written there, under those stores' rules. On Fairsay they follow these guidelines too, and can be reported like any other.
